The Importance of Good Conduct, AC [Institue Direct Chapel], New York, USA, 2009

In May 2005, I found myself, along with many others, awaiting my green card interview in the fluorescent-lit offices of the Immigration Naturalization Service in Garden City, Long Island.

In the waiting room, people were murmuring uneasily. I had a big envelope full of documents and two voluminous photo albums, all of which were to authenticate my marital relationship with an American citizen. My lawyer advised me not to say anything more than necessary.

My interviewer was American Chinese with the surname Tang on his nametag. He scanned me almost imperceptibly before leading us into his office.

Mr. Tang was very matter-of-fact.

In Symphony, the music is melodic; the interrogation is cold, mechanical; and the conductor is gesturing maniacally. It alludes to a maddeningly controlled system, in which institutional acceptance may in fact be more attainable than our search for the more intangibles.
